Originally from Hawaii, Chris Ota is now a San Francisco based user interface and user experience designer who is passionate about web design, usability, front-end web development, and best design practices. He has designed and implemented high impact websites and web applications for customers ranging from Apple, PIMCO Global, Clearstream.tv, Disney Aulani, and many more.
Prior to his relocation, he would stay active within the local design community as a part-time instructor in the New Media Arts Program at Kapiolani Community College, an executive board member for AIGA Honolulu as the web and communications chair, and a blogger on design.

User Interface Designer @ My primary focus is designing and building the front-end of an internal dashboard application, with a focus on data visualization for the Apple Maps Evaluation team. From August 2015 to Present (6 months) Contractor - User Interface Designer @ Full-time contractor, Apple Maps Evaluation team. From May 2015 to August 2015 (4 months) Web & Communications Chair @ Founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design and is now known simply as “AIGA, the professional association for design.”
AIGA and AIGA Honolulu help define global industry standards and ethical practices, guide design education, inspire designers and the public, enhance professional development, and make powerful tools and resources accessible to all. We spread awareness throughout our community with the use of social media, design-themed events, designer dialogues, and various workshops throughout the year. From July 2012 to April 2015 (2 years 10 months) Senior User Interface Designer, Head of Community Outreach @ I work with clients to understand the problems they are trying to solve using design. From discovery to launch, I assist in creating proposals, user experience strategy, information architecture, interface design, and front-end development. By working closely with clients in an agile environment, we make sure deliverables are met in a timely fashion within budget.
Besides designing interfaces, I work with frameworks such as Bootstrap and Foundation while trying to expand my development knowledge in Ruby on Rails, XAML, SCSS, HAML, Javascript and J-Query. From January 2012 to March 2015 (3 years 3 months) Lecturer @ Part-time lecturer for the Interface Programming II class. The goal of the class is to teach students the fundamentals of HTML and CSS and how they work together with design.
Students start by de-constructing websites via wireframing responsive break points, before applying basic coding principles to create a responsive layout, and finally incorporate design for a polished website. The focus of the class is to understand the importance of content and layout first. From August 2012 to December 2014 (2 years 5 months) Senior Web Designer @ Responsible for creating corporate identities and site redesigns with HTML/CSS development for a vareity of clients. Facebook, Twitter and Emma applications were used in association.
Internal projects included a user interface design for a custom web booking application.
Managed and provided client support in a timely manner. From September 2008 to September 2011 (3 years 1 month) Hawaiian IslandsUSA Swim Coach @ Beginner and intermediate certified USA swim coach. My main focus is teaching proper technique to a wide variety of age-group swimmers. I have coached beginning swimmers to national level competitors. From March 2005 to September 2011 (6 years 7 months) Hawaiian IslandsVideographer @ Responsible for video recording special events, which include wedding ceremonies and receptions at various sites, as well as other functions such as graduations and entertainment shows. Assisted with audio setup on site and post production video editing. From May 2005 to January 2010 (4 years 9 months) Hawaiian IslandsWeb Designer @ Worked closely with developers to create several interfaces for web and email campaigns. Responsible for content and design editing with their personalized content management system. From June 2008 to September 2008 (4 months) Hawaiian IslandsWeb Designer @ Designed and maintained an educational website for teachers, students and parents. Provided identity and logo design, email campaigns, and company presentations. From September 2007 to December 2007 (4 months) Hawaiian IslandsWeb Designer @ Worked on a variety of clients and also created an educational website. Interface design, corporate identity, HTML/CSS and multiple browser integrations were provided for clients. From June 2007 to August 2007 (3 months) Hawaiian IslandsWeb Designer @ As an intern for 6 months, I was responsible for designing and cutting web sites to implement EIS’s CMS system. The company worked at a fast pace to turn over websites quickly for clients to view. From September 2006 to March 2007 (7 months)
