Chris Nelson

Chris Nelson currently serves as the Supervising Environmental Analyst at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), where he leads the Source Reduction & Recycling Group within the Bureau of Materials Management. With a robust background in sustainable materials management and recycling policies, Chris is instrumental in advancing Connecticut's Solid Waste Management Plan. His expertise encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at increasing recycling rates and enhancing waste diversion efforts across the state. Notably, he is actively involved in implementing innovative Unit-Based Pricing (UBP) programs and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks, particularly for challenging waste streams such as electronic waste and paint.

In his role, Chris is committed to fostering a circular economy through effective product stewardship initiatives and food scrap diversion programs, which are critical to reducing landfill dependency and promoting resource recovery. His previous experience with the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and his work on climate change and energy policy have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between environmental compliance and sustainable development.
