The consultant peppered us relentlessly with difficult questions: “What guides your thinking, your strategic approach, your decisions, your actions?” “What will you insist on no matter what, EVEN if it becomes unprofitable?” “What gets you out of bed in the morning?" "What gives meaning to work & life?” “What is most important to your success?” “What do you appreciate most about your best people?” It was 2010. WebMechanix was barely a year old. We needed customers. We needed people. We needed systems. We needed processes. Certainly it wasn’t the time to think of some silly mission statement & a set of core values! We considered firing the consultant & being on our way. But for some reason, we didn’t. We answered the questions. He told us think about them longer, adjust the answers, let them marinate for a while. We soul-searched. What emerged became the basis of our mission & core values. We call them the ‘Why’ & the ‘How'. To be frank, at first it was almost purely lip service. “Yay, we have core values, let’s talk about them!” you can imagine us declaring skeptically. But something weird started happening. As we talked about them more, we started thinking about them more. People started weighing difficult decisions agains the ideologies. They began infiltrating our recruitment & selection process. Our management styles started adjusting to fit. We started actually *living* them. Today, everything we do is done through a lens of our Why & our How. So what's the why?
