From December 2015 to Present (1 month) Berlin Area, GermanyAssistant Director @ Assisted John Ramster on RAM's double-cast spring production of 'The Rake's Progress' by Stravinsky. Being organised, focused and on top of all of my responsibilities was essential. These included: keeping the Production book up-to-date; prompting the director and cast members when needed; taking and delivering notes; delivering the director's notes when asked; checking over the rehearsal schedule each week; writing extracts of the program; negotiating part replacements when chorus members were N/A or sick; and, attending and raising issues at Production meetings.
RAM were very pleased with my work and offered me another Assistant Director job this Autumn. From February 2015 to March 2015 (2 months) London, United KingdomSenior Mentor @ This promotion meant I was responsible for the welfare, safety and the character development of a group of 11 teenagers aged 16-17 for the duration of the government-funded program, the 'National Citizen's Service'. As well as being a role model and program facilitator in the first half of the course, I also delivered the curriculum in the second. This was an incredibly demanding role that necessitated: attention to detail, strong leadership skills, effective communication skills, the ability to prioritise, and strength of character. From October 2014 to November 2014 (2 months) Coventry, United KingdomAssistant Director @ Assisted director John Ramster on the RAM autumn Opera Scenes.
Responsibilities included: assisting on stage and lighting rehearsals; writing and maintaining the Production Book; running administrative errands to aid the smooth running of the show; and establishing good working relationships with the cast and crew. From September 2014 to October 2014 (2 months) London, United KingdomCommunity Facilitator @ In this role, I lead groups of 12 young people aged 16 – 17 to conceive of, create and carry out a community action project aimed at tackling a relevant issue in their local community. To lead and manage the young people effectively I had to be creative, inspiring, organised and demonstrate excellent communication skills. From July 2014 to September 2014 (3 months) Birmingham, United KingdomAssistant Director Placement @ This placement, which was created for me, was an immersive and comprehensive learning experience. My role included: assisting in production, technical and lighting rehearsals in Cardiff and on tour in Birmingham, as well as in cover rehearsals; keeping one of the Production Books up-to-date; attending scheduling meetings; taking, and giving, notes from stage rehearsals and on performance days; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with WNO members of Staff in other departments. As the process went on, I led some rehearsals myself and added creative ideas into the show with the director’s approval. From April 2014 to June 2014 (3 months) Cardiff, United KingdomHR Assistant @ Managed the Human Resources Department at WNO whilst the HR Manager was away on two separate occasions (Feb & July). Solely in charge of the Company’s personnel, contractual and recruitment issues for this period. From February 2014 to February 2014 (1 month) Cardiff, United KingdomOpera Director, Set & Costume Designer, & Administrator @ Director, set designer & administrator for ‘The Madness Game’, a recently commissioned modern opera. Performed in collaboration with Little Room Productions in order to showcase young, Bristol operatic talent. Together we commissioned this new, dark, psychological piece about the nature of the relationship between ‘insanity’ and ‘sanity' and helped shape the concept. My role was comprehensive: planning and directing rehearsals; creating and distributing rehearsal schedules; designing and sourcing the set and costumes; and providing creative input for the lighting and marketing, which included directing the trailer. From September 2013 to February 2014 (6 months) Bristol, United KingdomManagement Placement @ Participated in, and managed, a great variety of projects for the HR and Finance departments, and for the Managing Director of the Company, Peter Bellingham. These projects included writing co-production contracts, doing entire recruitment processes for various vacancies, and completely re-designing WNO’s Annual Report and Financial Statements 2013 document in accordance with their new marketing and branding guidelines. The variety of the projects meant that I had regular contact with other departments, especially the Marketing and Artistic Administration departments. From October 2013 to December 2013 (3 months) Cardiff, United KingdomArtistic Administrator @ Worked for the Director of the Clifton International Music Festival. The festival played host to a number of high profile performers, such as the Tallis Scholars, as well as up-and-coming Early Music artists. Organised the opening event and liaised with artists. From June 2013 to August 2013 (3 months) Bristol, United KingdomOpera Director, Set & Costume Designer, Stage Manager & Administrator @ In 2013 while at university in Bristol, I directed a 72-hour scratch performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’. Rehearsals began on a Saturday morning and by Monday evening we had given a sell-out performance to critical acclaim and turned a profit for the Bristol University Opera Society. Meticulous organisation was required to ensure that the venue, set, props, costumes, casting, publicity and blocking had been secured before the 72 hours began. As well as this being fun and rewarding, this experience taught me a huge amount about how to lead different groups of people effectively to achieve high quality work under serious time restraints.
