About Carl Shorter

📖 Summary

BIM Manager - System Railway & Infrastructure @ From March 2015 to Present (9 months) Director & Architectural Technician @ After being involved in residential projects for over seven years, I decided to set up my own company. Shorplans Architectural Services deals with small to medium scale developments; from outline to full planning, building control and approval, new builds, extensions and loft conversions. This involves liaising with local council planning authorities, residential clients and property developers, as well as networking at trade events such as The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show. My experience includes familiarity with the current building regulations approval documents, writing design and access statements and specifications. From February 2009 to Present (6 years 10 months) London, United KingdomCAD Design Coordinator @ To liaise with the design and construction contractors ensuring they adhere to Crossrail CAD Standards, procedures and processes. 2. Principal Accountabilities • Liaison with design and construction contractors ensuring all CAD design data is compliant with standards, is coordinated and is suitable for use throughout the project lifecycle. • Be a first point of contact to the contractors for CAD requests, queries, drawings deliverable issues and standards queries. • Liaise with the contractors on their necessary training requirements for attending the Crossrail/Bentley BIM Academy. • Meet with Project Managers and Field Engineers to discuss issues and problems with CAD data and educating them in the necessary procedures. • Be involved during the CAD drawing redline process and as-built process ensuring the project get delivered suitable data for use for Asset Management. From October 2012 to February 2015 (2 years 5 months) CAD Co-ordinator @ I provide support to engineers and management on existing and future CAD data, as well as represent London Tramlink on all CAD-related issues, such as CAD support services that may be running within TfL. Responsibilities also include ensuring that a robust, effective, standardised and constant CAD solution is available at all times to meet the varying CAD needs of the business in order to discharge contractual and legislative duties within London Tramlink. From July 2011 to October 2012 (1 year 4 months) London, United KingdomPremises Engineer @ Kennington SER Project - My role was to oversee the construction of the three-storey new build. This involved producing detailed design construction drawings, writing the premises specification, schedule of works, responding to CTIs as well as participating in design review meetings. Throughout, I interfaced with other disciplines within the team i.e. Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineers. During the construction stage, I undertook site visits to check the progress of works and resolved any design issues relating to the project. The construction of the Kennington SER was successfully completed in May 2010. Piccadilly Line SERs - This project consisted of a total of 49 SERs and relay rooms on the Piccadilly line. As a team, we were required to produce the first six, which were a mixture of new builds and equipment rooms within existing buildings. Within this project, I undertook numerous site visits and surveys to resolve any potential design issues. I was also involved in design review meetings where we worked in collaboration with other disciplines within the team i.e. Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineers. Based on the signal equipment room layouts, I produced the architectural construction drawings, specification and schedule of works. Software: MicroStation, NBS Building, ProjectWise, Photoshop, MS desktop, and London Underground Limited (LUL) Standards. From August 2009 to June 2010 (11 months) London, United KingdomPremises Engineer @ Vauxhall Station Project - My role was to develop and co-ordinate the design for this step-free access project from street to platform level. The scheme involved refurbishing the subways and ticket hall, as well as works to the platform; good knowledge of the LUL station planning guide and standards allowed me to keep the aesthetics at the forefront, whilst satisfying the regulatory standards. I was responsible for ensuring other disciplines e.g. engineers, worked alongside the architectural drawings and vice versa, to ensure there were no conflicting issues. Co-ordinating design review meetings between clients Metronet and LUL, was another responsibility; I had to ensure clients were up to date with the design phase. I also liaised with Lambeth council planning to ensure the permitted development application was approved, which did so successfully, and allowed LUL to proceed with the step-free access project. With regards to manufacturers and suppliers, I built strong relationships to ensure high quality, LUL-compliant finishes were used throughout the project. Other aspects involved non-intrusive surveying, developing CAD drawings on MicroStation as well as Photoshop when presenting to the client. As the designer, I independently produced architectural drawings from stages E-F as well as creating the specification using NBS Building. From September 2007 to March 2009 (1 year 7 months) London, United KingdomArchitectural Assistant @ Transport Architect Assistant – Dalston Station. This project involved designing a new Overground station as part of the East London line extension.
