About Brian Nelson

ūüďĖ Summary

Senior Software Engineer @ WSI Using C#, enhancing web services, the Ingestor, and client code for new features and bug fixing. Although new to C#, I'm also enhancing the existing code base to have less duplicate code and be more object oriented and robust. Also making extensive SQL Server database changes. Again, although new to SQL Server, when it came time to add some new customers, I decided the pre-existing paradigm of copying and pasting code from other customers views wasn't good enough, so I researched a better way which consisted of writing database functions that returned an inline table. These functions were parameterized (whereas views cannot be), so adding new customers will be trivial. At this point I've written and changed numerous views, stored procedures and functions. From April 2013 to March 2014 (1 year) Andover, MALead Product Developer @ BMC Software Building a web interface known as the BladeLogic Portal using HTML/CSS/JavaScript, as well as other front end technologies like JQuery, UnderscoreJS, KnockoutJS, Google Closure / Soy templates and Atmosphere. Java is used on the back end to talk to the REST server. This web UI is a streamlined, simpler and more intuitive way for users to create and execute jobs on the BladeLogic Server Automation server. From March 2014 to April 2015 (1 year 2 months) Lexington, MAPrincipal Software Engineer @ Rational Software Worked on mainly flagship GUI's for ClearCase (ClearCase Explorer, as well as other C++/MFC/COM GUI's). Also worked on Admin Tools in MMC and started out in the ClearCase core, taking out NFS references in various CLI commands. From October 1997 to February 2003 (5 years 5 months) Principal Software Engineer @ Digital Equipment Corporation Worked in Alpha Migration Tools group (did all GUI's for FX!32, as well as work on VEST/TIE translators), and Database Systems Group (Database Integrator, Rdb/*, VAX Data Distributor and VAX/IBM Database Access). From July 1985 to October 1997 (12 years 4 months) Senior Software Engineer @ Curriculum Associates Project lead for a group responsible for 3 mission critical applications. Original platform was in HTML/CSS/JS and jQuery, helped rewrite it using VueJS. The platform allows users to edit assesments and instruction that helps kids learn math and English in grades K-8. Completely transformed another mission critical task that used to take days and dozens of people and now can be done in hours with just a few. Also given a task to import nearly 10K items onto our platform; I delivered about 4.5X more as fully functional content than we originally promised. In both cases my work saved the company thousands of dollars and made everyone's lives easier and better by finding ways to automate those things which used to be done manually by people. Billerica, MASenior Member of Technical Staff @ SpringSource, a division of VMWare Volunteered to look at making the vFabric Administration Server easier to setup and use. Read the docs and installed the software, and came up with 3 recommendations: a Quick Start Guide, so users don't have to read the entire documentation in order to get up and running; a way to automate installing the vFabric Administration Agent onto all the managed nodes (and came up with a way to do this, even on Windows); and a Graphical User Interface for the server. Then researched alternative ways to build web UI's, and settled on Sencha's ExtJS framework. In just a few months, I've built a very slick UI that allows users to browse the artifacts on the server, create a group from a subset of the managed nodes, upload install images for the products managed, install the products, and create a running instance of the product on the group. Along the way, I've come up with some new and innovative UI's that have received very positive feedback. When I started, I didn't know JavaScript, the ExtJS framework, or the (REST) server API's. From August 2012 to April 2013 (9 months) Senior MTS (Member of Technical Staff) @ SpringSource, a division of VMWare Did build automation and continuous integration for various projects at SpringSource. Learned and utilized Ant and WiX for automating various aspects of these projects.Wrote the vFabric License Server Installer from scratch using InstallShield. From January 2010 to August 2012 (2 years 8 months) Advisory Software Engineer @ IBM Working with a Distinguished Engineer, designed a UI to simplify licensing; a patent is being written up to cover the new parts.Developed the user interface for the ClearCase Connector, a project in Jazz (IBM's new collaboration team platform). Starting from scratch, wrote the entire UI for our project by myself and had a credible interface by RSDC (June, 2007) and a much more polished, elegant interface by the end of the year. Developed in the Agile method espoused by Jazz and Eclipse, I continually got more done than I or anyone else thought possible.Development of ClearCase's flagship GUI's in Java/Eclipse for the ClearCase Remote Client. Responsible for the main views (ClearCase Navigator/Details, Metadata Explorer Navigator/Details) in the interface, but also contributed to all parts of the interface (Team Integration, infrastructure, etc). From February 2003 to November 2009 (6 years 10 months)
