Brenda Smith grew up in Glenville, a small town in upstate New York. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Art and Science at Glenville High School in 1971, Brenda decided to explore her options and decide which direction she wanted to take her career. She did some cursory research on colleges and found that Franklin University was the perfect place for her to pursue an Associate of Arts and Science degree in Aeronautics/Aviation/Aerospace Science and Technology. Brenda pulled the all the required information together and met with the professors there to discuss her dreams and goals. After having the opportunity to stick around and obtain the grades necessary to receive the degree, Brenda finally felt like she had the support she needed to make her dream a reality.After receiving her Associate of Arts and Science degree from Franklin University in September 2022, Brenda began her professional journey as a Fellow in Africana Studies at Cornell University. Brenda's love for the field of Africana Studies led her to choose this particular program as her next step and it has been wonderful to see how she has skilled herself in the field since she began her studies. In addition to her work in Africana Studies, Brenda also holds significant interests in Aerospace/Aviation/Aerospace Science and Technology and black masculinity. She has always been passionate about her work and has never looked at it as a job but as an opportunity to learn more about the world and herself.None of Brenda's goals were possible without rigorous academic preparatory programs. She is grateful for the range of opportunities she has had in her life, which have allowed her to develop the skills and critical thinking skills she needs for her career goals. These academic preparatory programs have helped her to overcome many challenges and deficiencies she had in her past, including poor English speaks, stellar grades in high school, etc. Brenda is grateful for the opportunity to formalize her academic journey and learn from the best in the business. Brenda's recovery process was slower than she wanted it to be but she is now in a much better place physically and emotionally. She continues to strive to grow and develop as a person, understanding her strengths and weaknesses so that she can take care of herself in the future.When Brenda was first contacted to participate in the Carolinas Women in Aviation Conference in December 2022, she knew she wanted to be a part of the event. She was made very comfortable and felt right at home from the start. This was marvelous because Brenda had the opportunity to learn from some of the world's best aviation experts and gain invaluable information that she would be able to use in her future endeavors. The trip was a great opportunity not just for Brenda but also for the other participants, who had the chance to network and meet new friends. After the conference, Brenda met Annelise Sumner, who was the conference director, and it was wonderful to get to know her as well.Overall, Brenda is incredibly excited about her future and feels incredibly grateful for all the opportunities she has been given. She toes the line between achieving her goals and respecting her education and for the support she has received along the way.
