From September 2005 to August 2006 (1 year) Director Autonomy @ Uber Advanced Technologies Group San Francisco Bay AreaVP Engineering @ 3D Robotics As VP of Engineering, I oversee the hardware and software development of 3DR’s first enterprise drone: Site Scan. The product is a hardware-software integration in partnership with Sony and Autodesk with 3DR’s Solo aircraft, camera gimbal, ground station, mobile applications and web services. I led the development these subsystem, focusing on system requirements and integration, and worked closely with product, sales, marketing, finance, and support to bring the product to market. Other focus areas include:○ Requirements setting for UAS photogrammetry: optimal survey, translating best practices from manned aerial photogrammetry to small-vehicle unmanned near-ground photogrammetry○ Partner interfacing: Sony, Autodesk, semiconductor producers, China OEMs and ODMs ○ System architecture for next generation vehicle capabilities From July 2016 to October 2016 (4 months) Berkeley, CAVP Software Engineering @ 3D Robotics As VP of Software Engineering, I led the overall system development of the 3DR Solo: the world’s first consumer drone focused on aerial cinematography. Solo is produced in China and sold in Best Buy and other retailers worldwide. From concept to production to sales, I lead a growing team of engineers to bring the product to market in less than 18 months. I focused primarily on the following aspects:○ Concept Design: Initial concept design, requirements identification, and user experience○ Systems Engineering: System architecture, communication topology, and messagingframework for the end-to-end system: camera gimbal - vehicle - ground station - mobileapplications - and web services○ Production: China-side factory engineering activities, including test jig automation, QAtesting procedures, and infrastructure for firmware deployment○ Reliability: Implementation of an over-the-air update system, logging, QA, and customersupport tooling for real-time automated issue classification and integration to Zendeskand other customer support backend systems○ API: Development and productization of a vehicle-mobile-cloud homogeneous API andSDK for drone application development: DroneKit○ Organization: Hiring and sustaining the software organization at 30 individualcontributors in 5 teams: embedded, guidance navigation and control, mobile, webbackend and frontend, and vision○ Rapid development: shipping feature updates and fixes every 30 days○ Leadership: Open Source Software community management with Dronecode and theLinux Foundation○ Fundraising: Series C From June 2014 to July 2016 (2 years 2 months) Berkeley, CASenior Research and Development Engineer @ 3D Robotics As a senior research and development engineer, I lead the development and integration of 3DR avionics (Ardupilot, APM, Pixhawk) into consumer and commercial vehicles. I primarily focused on systems engineering, flight characteristics, and integration of off-the-shelf sensors and airframes with 3DR avionics. Other responsibilities included:○ Open source autopilot development○ Avionics integration and tuning for 3DR’s first consumer multirotor: Iris○ Avionics integration, airframe development, and manufacturing for 3DR’s firstcommercial fixed wing and multirotor mapping platforms: Aero-M and X8-M○ Fundraising: Series B From April 2013 to June 2014 (1 year 3 months) Berkeley, CAGraduate Student Researcher @ Center for Collaborative Control of Unmanned Vehicles Research undertaken at UC Berkeley under Karl Hedrick in collaboration with the ACFR. Design of a flexible, extensible, and robust software system for mobile robotics. Simplifying the process of designing, implementing, and deploying robotics applications, which are typically hindered by low modularity and poor software reuse. This research culminated in a demonstration in which over 40 software components were deployed across five computing hosts, both airborne and ground-based, which carried out a collaborative mission.Research begun at the ACFR under Hugh Durrant-Whyte and continued at UC Berkeley. Casting complex mission planning scenarios in a reinforcement learning context. Leveraging artificial intelligence and control theory tools, including dynamic programming, reinforcement learning, and semi-Markov Decision Processes. From August 2006 to December 2012 (6 years 5 months) UC BerkeleySoftware Engineering Manager @ Uber Advanced Technologies Group From April 2017 to September 2018 (1 year 6 months) San Francisco Bay AreaAdvisor @ 3D Robotics I have an advisory role at 3D Robotics.
