Benjamin Kipnis was born in the City of New York in 1984. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, Kipnis moved to Columbia University in New York City, where he earned his Master's in Computer Software Engineering in 2004. Kipnis then moved to Berkeley, California, to continue his graduate studies in Computer Science, obtaining his Master's of Science in 2006.Kipnis's professional development experience includes time spent at Columbia University, where he was a Computer Software Engineering graduate student in 2004, followed by time spent at University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Computer Science undergraduate student in 2000. Kipnis continues to work as a software engineer, currently held a position as a Software Engineer with Google.While in graduate school, Kipnis also developed an interest in ethics and governance, and began to study the ethics and business of technology. This research led to his first book, "The Ethical maze: Essays on Technology and Democracy", which was published in 2009.Kipnis is currently a Research Scientist at Google, where he is working on a number of projects, most notably the Google Photos product. He has also written a number of academic papers in this area.While working on his graduate degrees, Kipnis also worked as a research fellow at Oxford University, in the Department of Philosophy and corresponding with the AIEE/IEEE Ethics Research Group.Kipnis is married to Emily Ng, with whom he has two children.
