I have spent three years as a media analyst for large digital advertising agencies in San Francisco. My main insight was acknowledging that we needed to automate many tasks that required a human to do a lot of clicking, lest I be ordered to do the clicking. This aversion to clicking led me into programming and software development. In December of 2013 I left my last agency to put some serious effort into R and Python development. After a short while I began getting short term contracts that exposed me to new conceptual and technical problems.
I enjoy data viz. I'm developing an adaptation of the grammar of graphics in D3. Some examples can be seen at the following links:
Visualizing statistical output with python and d3:
Integrating novel visualizations (circle-packing) with ggd3 to display proportional data:
R and Shiny backend with some ggplot2 in there as well.
(this is on a small AWS EC2 instance and may require some time to load)
Developer/IT Consultant @ Winter 2015: Private advisor to manager of Voleris Airlines online marketing campaign. Did stats on some email, display and search campaign data. Created web based reporting prototype in R.
Summer-Fall 2014: Butler, Stern, Shine & Partners - One of four developers revamping a comprehensive tool for internal and external clients. Mainly I worked on smoothing out the data ingestion process from DFA and funneling it into a complicated Pentaho pipeline. Together we also spent quite a bit of time brainstorming containerizing the whole system with some combination of Ansible and Docker, but I never saw those plans materialized.
Fall 2014: Stride Health - Designed UI to track customers through health insurance enrollment pipeline using D3.js and angular.js with a Django-postgres backend.
Spring 2014: Bright Bytes, Inc. - Vetted and QA'd statistical software, written in R, designed to predict recidivism in high school students. Responsible for executing the software as well as explaining its use, advantages, and shortcomings to the organization. From December 2013 to Present (2 years 1 month) Senior Analyst @ Odd jobs with Python and R. I was the guy to go to in the office for questions surrounding these things. Pretty good at Tableau.
Wrote programs to train regression models on fairly large datasets (>100k x 200) using Rstudio and AWS. Processed output into PMML files (XML for modeling) and uploaded to real time decision making platform.
Automated ETL jobs with BigQuery/Google Storage, AWS DataPipeline/S3, and in house Mapr/Hadoop/Hive stack. Wrote some custom MapReduce jobs in Python.
Part of a team that got an unofficial honorable mention at the Facebook VizCup - you'll have to take my word for it. From August 2012 to November 2013 (1 year 4 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSenior Analyst @ The intent of MediaBrands Audience Platform (formerly Cadeon) was to deliver audience-specific display ads for their clients. The main deliverable used third party data to show how audiences that received the client's display ads indexed against visitors to a given site or the population in general. This data was used to inform media buys.
When I was brought on, the primary analytic product required at least a week of preparation and a couple people. I automated this process with a few R and Python scripts that prepared the required data for presentation in Tableau.
