I am a senior technology leader with broad experience in all aspects of Software Engineering, Mobile App delivery, Systems Administration, Technical Architecture, and Systems Engineering. I have experience with greenfield DevOps initiatives as well as leading transformational change to become more stable and agile. I'm highly passionate about learning new things, making a difference and making the world a better place.
As a leader, I believe that hiring intelligent people and empowering them to act using their best judgement is critical to the success of the teams I lead. I believe this, coupled with a blame-free, highly accountable environment where people learn from their mistakes and continually improve, allows teams to move as quickly as possible and achieve high-quality, personal-best results.
Head of Site Reliability Engineering @ * Shazam is one of the best-known and most-loved apps in the world. We facilitate the recognition of music, images and location-based content for over a hundred million people per month.
* I lead a team of 11 Site Reliability Engineers to build and scale the systems to handle tens of thousands of requests per second, handling searches on our bespoke GPU infrastructure, containing over 40 million songs. The team is also responsible for interfacing directly with our third party partners to ensure that we have all the latest music in our systems, which means ingesting up to a million tracks per day into our database. In addition to this, the team is responsible for all of the infrastructure that powers our analytics and reporting systems.
* Our team has been shifting from a more operational, fire-fighting role to one that is deeply involved in the development lifecycle; employing continuous integration and deployment techniques, bringing DevOps thinking and practices to the business, and leveraging better practices to continually improve our processes and technologies.
* Shazam is a very data-rich company, and my team specifically is responsible for collecting over 500,000 operational and business metrics per second, building tools and dashboards to give situational awareness to our teams and other stakeholders within the business.
* In the past 6 months, we've cut down the number of alerts our on-call engineers receive, reducing alert fatigue and speeding up our mean time to recovery. We've replaced a 24x7 staffed NOC with an automatic alerting system, and have reduced the number of critical incidents significantly. On-call engineers are happier and are getting more sleep! From September 2014 to Present (1 year 3 months) London, United KingdomDirector of Technology @ * Built and scaled infrastructure to facilitate thousands of concurrent requests per second supporting the next-generation "fan-sourcing" platform deployed on some of the largest Internet retailers' websites.
* Guided a team of systems architects and systems engineers to create a fully automated provisioning and continuous deployment process utilizing Chef, Jenkins and Bamboo to maximize uptime and scalability.
* Slashed deployment time and effort required by developers and systems engineers to deploy code by developing a tool called "Fretnot," which delivered one-button deployments and full-circle reporting of deployment status to the entire organization.
* Developed Needle's fan-sourcing product using Django, Python, Javascript, C, MongoDB, ElasticSearch, Redis and MySQL on the Amazon AWS platform.
* Interacted with customers in both pre- and post-sales implementation discussions, easing the integration process and delivering high-quality experiences to our customers.
* Acted as development team lead, mentoring junior developers with code reviews and architecture oversight. From April 2010 to August 2014 (4 years 5 months) bluffdale, utSystems Architect @ * Built and managed a large-scale data center migration project designed to move from several small, local data center providers to a global provider that could reduce costs and provide Blue Coat with better hosting services and network connectivity. Deployed services in data centers in Virginia, California, Hong Kong, UK and Australia.
* Led the systems architecture design and implementation for Blue Coat's global cloud services.
* Created what is called a "data-center-in-a-box" which is all of Blue Coat's cloud-service ratings system contained in a single server for ease of deployment around the world in locations that would not make sense to build a larger-scale presence.
* Managed all aspects of a large-scale business-critical infrastructure, implement an enterprise monitoring tool using project management and technical skills, work to provide a top-notch experience for internal and external customers interacting with customer-facing systems. From June 2006 to April 2010 (3 years 11 months) Greater Salt Lake City AreaSoftware Engineer @ * Responsible for the architectural design of WSDInfo.net, Weber School District’s informational portal for staff, students, teachers, and parents.

* Architected and participated in implementing enterprise identity management solution for 2,500 employees, 25,000 students, and over 50,000 parents.
* Developed web applications to deliver grades, rosters, attendance, and other critical data surfacing applications for parents, teachers, administrators, employees and students. From June 2003 to June 2006 (3 years 1 month) Ogden, UTSr. Systems Administrator @ * Maintained large enterprise portal using iPlanet Portal Server for Eaton, Inc. a $7.3 billion diversified manufacturing company.
* Received and deployed code into development, QA, and production environments for Eaton, Inc.

* Designed and implemented an enterprise-scale monitoring system to monitor all systems at the Primary Data Center, Secondary Data Center, Integration Lab and all venue locations.
* Provided application administration for all central applications including timing and scoring, web services, and data dissemination through web services to MSNBC.
* Installed all central application deliveries from development teams.
