About Anson PhD

📖 Summary

I am a Data-Scientist Supervisor at AKQA, where I use my expertise in experimental design, programming, statistics, and machine learning to help major companies (e.g., Yahoo, Intuit, Audi, etc.) collect and utilize their data. I completed a PhD and a post-doc (@ Stanford). in a quantitative area of psychology/neuroscience (e.g., fMRI) that required extensive knowledge about experimental design, scientific approaches, data munging, statistical analysis (e.g., generalized linear models, dimensionality reduction, multilevel-modeling, etc) and presentation (I published 12 papers in the field's top journals and gave scientific talks to over 300 people). My research interests also gave me me an acute understanding of why people behave, think, and interact the way they do. I have worked as a scientific consultant for Lumosity (I built a prototype for a brain-training game) and completed a immersive fellowship in data science at Zipfian Academy / Galvinize (e.g., database storage and query, machine learning, data mining, data visualization, Hadoop, etc.).Data Scientist Supervisor @ DATA SCIENCE: Used expertise in experimental design, programming, statistics, and machine learning to help major companies (e.g., Yahoo, Intuit, Audi, etc.) collect and identify the actionable signal in their data. TYPES/EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS: -Used time-series and machine-learning methods and models to forecast future activity (e.g., search) -Built a custom algorithm (Python / OOP / test-driven), based upon game theory (Shapely Values), as an Multi-Touch Attribution Model -Automated Hierarchical bayesian models for predicting online ad revenue -Building web apps for analysts to use as in-house data science tools -Building data pipelines: Pulling data from MapR/Hadoop, API's, and/or SQL databases; data munging/transformation and model building; interactive visualizations of final output (e.g., with Tableau, web interface, etc.); automating all processes/scripts (e.g., remote servers, cron jobs, error detection system) -Communication: presented to clients, including to C-level executives from large public corporations. SKILLS USED: -Statistics & Machine Learning (generalized linear models; frequentist & bayesian approaches; multi-level models; supervised and unsupervised ML models; Monte Carlo; Bagging; Cross-validation, etc.) -Programming languages (Python, R, Bash); -Database querying (HIVE, SQL); -Visualization (Tableau, ggplot2, matplotlib, Bokeh); -Version control (Git & SVN); -Web development: Flask; Heroku; -AWS (S3, RDB, EC2, etc.); -Managerial (managed and mentored developing analysts and data scientists). From March 2014 to Present (1 year 10 months) Data-science consultant @ Island LLC underwent major changes. I helped the company understand possibilities with data and integrate new data sources into LLC. From February 2014 to March 2014 (2 months) Data Science Fellow @ DATA ANALYSIS: Executed end-to-end data analysis, which included data munging, machine learning (recommendation systems, supervised learning/unsupervised learning, etc.), data mining, data processing at scale, visualization, multi-arm bandits, database storage and query, etc. CAPSTONE PROJECT: SF Neighborhood Recommender - identifies off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods that are similar to well known ones. Two-week long project. RECOGNITION: The most popular data-science aggregator, datascienceweekly.org, featured my blog post (issue #16; http://bit.ly/1bejcnM). My blog post was also nominated and, at one point, ranked number 1 at DataTau.com and Reddit's data science branch. For blog posts on my project and Zipfian Academy, please see my tumblr blog: http://ansonwhitmer.tumblr.com For code (ipython notebooks) from my project, see: https://github.com/whitmera/Zipfian_project-similarity_between_SF_neighborhoods SKILLS INVOLVED: Python, R, Shell, Git, SQL, D3, Hadoop, Pig, Hive, etc. From September 2013 to December 2013 (4 months) Scientific Consultant @ GAMIFICATION: Used principals of gamification to turn personal scientific theory into an online, interactive prototype of a brain-training game SEMANTIC ANALYSIS: Researched principals of semantic association in order to identify appropriate word databases for the game CODE: Scraped and curated databases; Used Python to program automatic game prototype and analyze the robustness of automatic-selection algorithm From July 2013 to September 2013 (3 months) Postdoctoral Fellow @ RESEARCH DESIGN: Translated abstract problems in psychology into hypotheses that can be tested with quantitative methods. Examined why people behave, think, and interact like they do. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Use a variety of methods, including correlational, data mining, longitudinal, day-to-day experience sampling, genetic, and functional magnetic resonance imaging approaches; Referee research articles for 13 peer-reviewed psychology journals. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Managed and/brought to completion 17 different research projects over the past three+ years; Managed, trained, and mentored research assistants at multiple sites. DATA ANALYSIS: Have used a variety of statistical approaches, including multilevel modeling, principal components analysis, logistic regression, multiple regression, MANOVA, etc.; Analyzed behavioral data and four-dimensional imaging data from fMRI studies (more than 100 GB of data); Have written code with shell, python, SPSS, and R for data munging and analysis. COMMUNICATION: Given research talks to as many as 300 people; Published 12 papers (9 first author) publications in highly selective, high impact journals with a multidisciplinary readership, including Psychological Bulletin, and Psychological Science. GRANT WRITING: Secured and managed a personal grant for over $150,000 from the National Institute of Health; Collaborated with colleagues to write and generate ideas for major grant applications. From October 2009 to June 2013 (3 years 9 months) Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant @ Studied graduate-level statistics, research methods, psychology, neural networks, & neuroscience Taught laboratory sections of courses, including Statistics and Research Methodology (8 times), 14 times Published research in top journals From August 2003 to September 2009 (6 years 2 months) Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychology @ Stanford University From 2009 to 2013 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience @ University of Colorado at Boulder From 2003 to 2009 B.S., Psychology @ University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign From 1997 to 2002 Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Spanish @ University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign From 1997 to 2002 Anson PhD is skilled in: Statistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, R, fMRI, Multivariate Statistics, Experimental Design, Python, Data Mining, SQL, Data Analysis, Machine Learning, Bash, Hadoop, A/B testing
