A law graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, AMC qualified as a chartered accountant with PwC in London. From there, he moved to Morgan Grenfell and later Ratners Group where he was CFO. In 1990 AMC was appointed chairman and CEO of Sale Tilney and in 1993, he joined Queens Moat Houses as CEO, a hotel group with 189 properties, and debt of £1.4bn provided by 74 banks. AMC led a new team in reducing debt through disposals and growing EBITDA through 1995-2003 on the back of a successful operating strategy and improved corporate governance.
He was CEO of Jockey Club Racecourses from 2004 to 2007 where he developed a more commercial approach to the business and directed the investment of £100m. From 2008 to 2009 , AMC was chairman and CEO of McCambridge Group, where he led a successful turnround of this bakery products group on the back of stronger quality control and a more robust approach to supermarket customers.
In March 2010, he joined De Vere Group as executive chairman, and assumed the additional role of CEO in September 2011. He created a strategy of building and crystallising value to repay the £1.1bn due to Lloyds Bank. As a result, some piecemeal disposals were made, and then each of the three core divisions were sold to three separate US private equity firms during 2014. Such disposals raised over £1bn.
In a non-executive capacity, AMC was chairman of Tourism Ireland (2000-2007), chairman of London Irish (2008-2011), an independent director of Crest Nicholson (2008-2010) and a member of Lloyds Bank’s Advisory Board on Ireland (2012).
He was awarded a CBE in 2008 for services to Irish Tourism.
