http://www.contractavailability.com/u/alister | http://careers.stackoverflow.com/alister | http://phpscaling.com/ If you are a contractor - sign up at http://contractavailability.com and tell be able to tell all the recruiters when you're looking for a new job. If you're looking, and you have the skills they need - you get the call. I build websites - sometimes big and complicated ones, with a lot of functionality that need careful attention to issues like code quality, and scaling issues. Think of me as much of a trouble-shooter, going into a site to fix it, and make sure it can grow - a lot. My base of knowledge is large - I collect information and soak it up like a sponge - though if I don't know a particular field (that I'm actually interested in) well, I've probably got a lot of information on the subject to hand. Specialities: Linux and LAMP system architecture, Scaling & Ops. PHP Development, Zend Framework and testing (with PhpUnit), MySQL. Recently: I've been writing Symfony2 based websites and tools.Independent Consultant/Entrepreneur @ I'm Currently investigating how contract (& perm) recruitment works, with the aim of seeing if I can write a system to be able to improve it somewhat. From July 2013 to Present (2 years 6 months) Senior (Contract) PHP Developer @ From February 2014 to December 2014 (11 months) Contract PHP Developer @ From March 2013 to August 2013 (6 months) Contract PHP dev/devops/Technical Architect @ From 2012 to 2013 (1 year) PHP Developer (contract) @ Back end code, using Zend Framework, and devops/sysadmin, including Puppet and Linux system administration. From May 2012 to August 2012 (4 months) PHP Developer @ Building a prototype website in PHP/ZendFramework for the Office Of The Public Guardian, based in GDS, home of the new https://www.gov.uk/ site. From February 2012 to May 2012 (4 months) Taking a Sabbatical between jobs @ I’m taking some time off between looking for my next role. This does give the opportunity to write more blog posts for http://PHPScaling.com and the tools around development that I’ve been using in the last couple of years, and that have been piquing my curiosity. I'll also take the opportunity to check out new languages, and tools, such as Python, Ruby, Puppet & Node.js. I’m happy to talk to various companies, even some ad-hoc consulting and advising, as well as discuss potential roles, but I’m not currently planning to start, a new role until the new year. From November 2011 to February 2012 (4 months) Platform Engineer/Developer @ The PeerIndex platform is a big data platform that ingests, processes and analyses millions of user profiles, social action data and other URLs to produce easy to understand ratings information about people, their social impact, topic expertise, likes and dislikes as well as the communities they are a member of. Check out at http://www.peerindex.net/ and you can check your own measure of online authority at http://www.peerindex.net/[Twitter-name] From February 2011 to November 2011 (10 months) Senior PHP Developer / Technical architect @ Binweevils is a flash-based game for 6-13yr olds. * Written back-end (PHP) code, improving the functionality and maintainability * Improving the systems to survive being advertised dozens of times per day on various TV channels, inc Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and GMTV. * Improved the Database, added some caching, and arranged to move content to a CDN (and extending that with video and changing CDNs for even better performance/value) * Extending the system onto multiple highly optimised PHP servers to handle in excess of 8,500 concurrent user, and over twenty million fully dynamic PHP/DB hits per day. * interviewed for an additional PHP developer to take over the day-to-day development * work on the technical architecture and further extending the systems in a new cluster, using all the techniques I'd already put into place for a planned 7-10x increase in size in the next 12 months. From December 2009 to January 2011 (1 year 2 months) independent projects @ Planned sabbatical between positions From May 2009 to November 2009 (7 months) Lead Dev/Sysadmin @ Chief cook and bottle-washer. Besides all the day-to-day work that I have to contend with, I've also vastly improved the back-end admin, added a lot of caching to speed the site and wrangled a 12GB database. First thing I did though, was stop the database crashing, that brought the site down a few times a day - then they offered me the job. Since then, it's gone from 75,000 members to 300,000+ in around 2 years From February 2007 to May 2009 (2 years 4 months) Developer / Sysadmin @ AMV is an SMS / Entertainment company, selling wallpapers and videos for mobile phones From January 2006 to January 2007 (1 year 1 month) PHP Developer @ PHP Developer and part-time sysadmin for a small web-shop. I updated their internal systems to support a revision control workflow and co-wrote a number of their updated fuel-card oriented websites, as well as a number of other sites for more clients. From June 2004 to September 2005 (1 year 4 months) Sysadmin @ System admin & web-developer. I kept the small-iron running, despite hundreds of thousands of hits to our servers by pretty much every single BTinternet & BTclick customer downloading their latest company news. For that, I also wrote a customised mass-mailing system (270,000 mails to BTclick users) and tracking for the BTinternet update mails. From January 2003 to June 2004 (1 year 6 months) PHP Developer / Sysadmin @ After working for several years as a freelancer with them (as Osborne Marketing Limited), this was my first actual employed position developing websites - and running the server(s). Also where I started learning PHP. The high-end real-estate website immediately before that though was good enough to get me a bonus of a good bottle of whiskey. I am however tee-total :-) From November 1996 to December 2002 (6 years 2 months) Alister Bulman is skilled in: Linux System Administration, LAMP, PHP, MySQL, Linux, Symfony Framework, Linux server administration, Git, Apache, PHPUnit, Databases, APIs, Web Applications, Scalability, Puppet
