I am a Data Scientist for MTV Networks (Viacom) with a PhD in Political Science from the University of California San Diego. My dissertation --with funding from the National Science Foundation-- used machine learning to uncover hidden relationships between income inequality, local elections and the provision of public goods (water, sewerage) to the poor in Mexico.
I currently apply machine learning algorithms to deepen our understanding of audiences and content. This requires building cutting-edge predictive models; discovering hidden similarities between users and media content through clustering, dimensionality reduction, collaborative filtering and other matrix decomposition techniques; using network analysis to understand the diffusion of messages in social media; classifying content with topic modeling and other natural language processing methods; implementing AB testing frameworks (both frequentist and Bayesian), and applying time-series analysis to forecast performance. I am passionate about applying these skills to uncover hidden insights about human behavior.
My expertise involves every aspect in the data chain: generating conceptual road-maps according to strategic business goals; coordinating with back-end engineers to rethink how data is captured, stored and managed; auditing voluminous sources of third-party data to ensure its integrity, and finally automating the generation of reports using this data. The high-level goal is to design and build the most appropriate measurements from the onset because statistical sophistication cannot make up for poorly designed and noisy data. Avoiding sample bias and measurement error through clean design is key for obtaining useful, actionable understanding of audiences and content.
I'm always happy to do pro-bono work for the right cause, please contact me if you'd like us to collaborate!
