Alan worked for over 20 years with Russell Investments, the well known investment research and asset management company. During this period, he rose to the position of Chief Executive, Asia-Pacific - a position he held for over a decade, overseeing Russell's businesses in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, China, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. While Chief Executive, he grew the company's Asia-Pacific funds under management from $A 4 billion to over $A 34 billion, managing Russell's transformation from primarily a pension fund consultant to a significant force in the funds management industry.
Prior to joining Russell, Alan was a consultant at McKinsey & Co, specialising in strategy development for Australian corporates.
Alan started his working life as a chemical engineer, working in oil refineries and design offices in Australia, the UK, South Africa and the USA.

From January 2015 to Present (1 year) Director @ Ongoing role as a Director of Russell's Australian Investment Management company. This continues Alan's long serving relationship with the venerable investment research and funds management company. From January 1998 to Present (18 years) Vice Chairman @ Led the creation and then became the Vice Chairman of the Ping An Russell Joint Venture in Shanghai China. The JV was designed to bring the Russell Investment paradigm to China. Major achievement was the creating of a direct investment China Fund in Ireland to allow global institutional investors to invest directly in China using the Russell multi-manager approach. From April 2011 to April 2015 (4 years 1 month) Shanghai City, ChinaCEO Asia Pacific @ Russell Investments is a global asset manager and one of only a few firms that offers actively managed multi-asset portfolios and services that include advice, investments and implementation. Clients are both institutions and retail investors.
In this role Alan oversaw all of Russell’s business in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Alan also served on Russell’s Global Executive Committee. While in the role, Russell Asia-Pacific grew its funds management AUM from $A4 billion to in excess of $A35 billion. From January 2001 to October 2013 (12 years 10 months) Managing Director - Retail @ In this role, Alan drove the establishment of Russell's retail funds management business through a strategic relationship with ANZ Funds Management known as the Gateway investment program. From its inception in 1998 until his elevation to CEO in 2001, AUM grew from zero to $A 4 bn. From January 1998 to January 2001 (3 years 1 month) Head of Business Development - Asia @ In this role, Alan undertook on the ground research into business opportunities for Russell in the Asia ex-Japan region. Having completed the research, he then led the effort to develop clients in the most favourable markets including Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea and succeeded in generating revenue in all of these nascent markets. From January 1994 to December 1997 (4 years) Senior Consultant @ Alan commenced his career at Russell as an investment consultant, managing key consulting relationships with large clients including the BHP Superannuation Fund, the Transport Accident Commission of Victoria and State Superannuation Fund of NSW. From March 1991 to December 1993 (2 years 10 months) Consultant @ Traditional McKinsey consulting role specialising in corporate strategy for large Australian corporates including Hamersly Iron, Kembla Coal & Coke, Arnotts Biscuits, Queensland Cement and BHP. From November 1986 to December 1990 (4 years 2 months) Design Engineer @ Worked on engineering design and pilot plant demonstrations for the conversion of Oil Shale in liquid hydrocarbon products. From February 1981 to January 1985 (4 years) Engineer @ Various engineering design roles in oil refineries and engineering design offices in Brisbane, Australia, London, UK and Sasolburg, South Africa.
