Sexton led the greenlight investment of social marketing site TakePart.com ($10M+ investment); shared executive committee work involving Summit Entertainment financing (later acquired by Lionsgate for $412.5M), and the film investment from Imagenation Abu Dhabi ($250M).
Sexton worked on Participant films’ Waiting for Superman, Food Inc., The Visitor, Charlie Wilson’s War, Fast Food Nation, The Kite Runner, and the Academy Award®-winning documentaries An Inconvenient Truth and The Cove. From September 2006 to August 2008 (2 years) Beverly Hills, CAFounding Partner @ Sexton co-founded TAG Strategic, a digital media and entertainment agency with EMI veteran and digital pioneer Ted Cohen. TAG’s diverse client roster has included Lionsgate, Eyespot, Qualcomm, Sandisk, Muze, LimeWire, Participant Media and LivePlanet.
Sexton strategized digital distribution, marketing and business planning for media companies and interactive startups, including IP licensing deals with Lucasfilm. TAG launched a digital entertainment partnership with Edelman, creating end-to-end business, distribution and communications strategy counsel.
Sexton was hired out of TAG Strategic by entertainment client, Participant Media, to run digital full time in January 2007. From June 2006 to January 2007 (8 months) Century City, CAVice President, Head of Digital Media @ Sexton headed Digital Media as Vice President at Lionsgate, where he oversaw the day-to-day marketing, operations, production, media planning and business development for digital and mobile properties. He also worked in corporate development, supporting the studio's catalog growth and financing.
His duties encompassed theatrical, home entertainment, television, international and physical studios. He oversaw the digital campaigns for such movies as the Best Picture Academy Award ®-winning Crash, Oscar®-winning Monster’s Ball, Fahrenheit 9/11, as well as the SAW and Tyler Perry franchises. He and his team were awarded a Clio for the first SAW film website.
Sexton identified multiple-platform marketing, distribution and sales opportunities for the studio’s 8000+ title film library in such high-growth markets as broadband, mobile, digital cinema, peer-to-peer and IPTV. Lionsgate’s market capitalization rose from $60 million to $1.2 billion during Sexton’s tenure; and he was part of the senior team which secured the $350 million credit facility to acquire Artisan Entertainment.
Sexton was director of new media at MediaPact Capital, a $500M media management and investment company, run by former Sony Pictures Television head, Jon Feltheimer, and Prudential Securities managing director, Michael Burns. In early 2000, Mediapact led a $33M preferred equity position in Lionsgate with strategic partners - Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures, Capital Research and Fidelity Investments - taking over management control at Lionsgate.
