These initiatives extend across a variety of media and platforms to include development of ebooks (including associated video, audio and ancillary media content); in conjunction with the Production department, the acquisition of a content management system and development of an XML workflow that facilitates conversion to ebook formats as well as chunking of content; development of partnerships across both online and mobile platforms for the purpose of content licensing and digital distribution; as well as management of in-house systems necessary for the tracking and dissemination of information across departments. The goal of the position is not only to setup these various initiatives, but also ensure their long-term success by implementing sustainable best practices across departments that anticipate, adapt to and capitalize on changing digital conditions. From January 2010 to February 2011 (1 year 2 months) Greater Boston AreaAssistant to the President @ The Harvard Common Press As the Assistant to the President, I served as a primary liaison for the President of the Company. Primary responsibilities included attending all meetings related to publisher business, following up with key contacts for the purpose of reiterating goals and moving projects forwards, interfacing with authors, agents and clients on a daily basis, taking and disseminating minutes for critical meetings, evaluating unsolicited manuscripts, arranging and participating in extensive travel engagements, and serving in an auxiliary role for any functions not covered under other departments. From March 2009 to January 2010 (11 months) Greater Boston AreaPublicity Associate @ The Harvard Common Press The Publicity Associate works in an auxiliary role with the Publicity Director. Primary responsibilities include media relations with newspaper and online outlets, organizing of review copy mailings, writing press releases and pitch letters, setting up interviews for authors and facilitating communication between the publisher, the authors and the press. Also includes development of new internet marketing tactics for the purpose of delivering information and content direct to consumers. During this time, the company made investments in three separate startups: Yummly, an intelligent recipe search engine that learns your taste preferences the more you use it, Caviar, a curated restaurant-delivery service, and Crowdly, a social brand management platform that works with large food companies and others to help them better engage their customers via social media.All three companies have undergone significant growth and valuation increases since the initial investments. Caviar was acquired by Square in 2014.As of 2015, my new investments in foodtech are made through Salt Venture Partners. From January 2010 to March 2016 (6 years 3 months) Greater Boston AreaAssociate Publisher @ The Harvard Common Press As Associate Publisher of the Harvard Common Press, I oversee and assist on many aspects of our publishing program, including our digital/ebook strategy, marketing and social media planning, author/agent relations, contract negotiations, strategic business development, sales and acquisitions (including foreign rights).Harvard Common Press is one of the leading independent cookbook publishers in the United States. With over 3 decades of excellence in the non-fiction publishing arena, the company has produced dozens of best-selling and award-winning titles that are recognized as category leaders. Over the past 5 years, the company has also been an early-adopter of ebook and online publishing technologies and social media. During that time, the company also broadly expanded its strategic initiatives, forming partnerships and investment relationships with a number of emerging food startups. With a deep backlist of content, and a tradition of publishing high-quality cookbooks, Harvard Common Press has established itself as both an industry stalwart and a company that is at the leading edge of innovation, in terms of content use and reuse, online and social marketing, strategic partnership and investing.In February 2016, the Harvard Common Press was acquired by Quarto Publishing Group USA and remains an active imprint under their QuartoCooks brand. I continue to work with the company as a consultant. From January 2011 to February 2016 (5 years 2 months) Greater Boston AreaAssistant Project Manager @ Inkwell Publishing Solutions Oversaw translation of Spanish ancillary materials for Harcourt's Grade 3-6 English textbook program. Worked between editors, translation houses, and in-house staff, proofread, edited and archived manuscripts. Developed plans to meet biweekly deadlines for each grade, with over 25,000 pages under my supervision.This was a summer position, which is why it only lasted 4 months. From June 2007 to September 2007 (4 months) Greater New York City AreaExecutive Producer @ The 26th Annual EVVY Awards Headed the largest student produced award show in the country with 150+ members and 30+ producers and coordinators. Developed and executed plans for 7 different departments, including marketing, sponsorship, and artistic design throughout the course of 14 months. Trained and mentored underclassmen through weekly in-studio workshops, remote shoots, and hands-on training with equipment. Worked through professional circles to find judges for the submissions for the show. Enlisted over 180 judges from L.A, N.Y and other notable media centers. Collected over 800 submissions from Emerson students for judging. From June 2006 to June 2007 (1 year 1 month) Greater Boston AreaSeed Investor @ Travel Startups In addition to investing in food startups through The Food Loft for the past ten years, we've launched an adjacent investment program focused on travel startups. We're looking for early stage travel startups harnessing technology for either B2C or B2B implementations. It was built out of our extensive network in food entrepreneurship and investing. The Food Loft offers entrepreneurs a place to work as well as a robust community of like-minded individuals creating new solutions for the food space. We are developing programming, events and networking opportunities that bring together producers, innovators, investors and enthusiasts to help forge a future for innovative food-centered startups.In addition to our work with the Food Loft co-working space, we also continue to make early-stage investments in foodtech companies focused on content, commerce and restaurant-tech.
